A single petrol bowser starts the von Bibra Motor Group Dynasty!

In 1935 in the northern Tasmanian town of Ulverstone, M.D (Dudley) von Bibra commenced business with £16. With this princely sum he bought a petrol bowser and entered the world of cars. Two years later he was able to purchase part of the site that was then occupied by the Ulverstone Commercial Hotel and start a petrol station. In 1955 he bought the Commercial hotel, itself, which was soon to be condemned and demolished and on this site he developed his first car yard.

79 years later the von Bibra group now calls the Gold Coast home!

By 1998 the von Bibra Motor Group had 130 employees and was operating multiple New Car franchises in Burnie, Ulverstone, Devonport, and Launceston. These facilities made the von Bibra Motor Group the dominant dealership auto group in the North of Tasmania. However, an opportunity arose for the von Bibra Motor Group to purchase a Dealership on the Gold Coast in Queensland. Dudley von Bibra’s son, Warren grabbed this opportunity with both hands and in 2000 Warren von Bibra sold up all of the Tasmanian car dealerships to focus solely on the von Bibra Queensland operation.

The von Bibra Group now has 10 new car brands and a huge range of quality used cars at 4 convenient locations on the Gold Coast

Like father like son, the dynasty entered a new era!

Just as Warren had joined his father in the car business in the 1960’s in 2002 Warren’s son Wade joined the business beginning as a used car salesman and over the next few years Wade spent time working in every part of the business till in 2010 Wade assumed the position of Group General Manager of the von Bibra Motor Group. Since then Wade has overseen the building of two new state of the art showrooms and a new service and parts facility at Robina With Wade now controlling the day to day operations of the von Bibra Motor Group and plenty of new opportunities on the horizon one thing still remains consistent, the staff training, advertising and customer service principles that began with his grandfather, Dudley, way back in 1935.

Q & A with Wade von Bibra

Q.How did you become involved as a sponsor with our football club?
A.Several of our employees used to play for the Demons and we love to support our work mates when they’re involved in the community.  Our sponsorship goes back at least 10 years……if not more, when my son (Lachie) was keen to play, there was only one club he was going to start with!
Q.Do you have a favourite AFL Team?
A.I’ve been a mighty Bombers tragic all my life……they haven’t been ‘mighty’ for a while 🙁
Q.Who’s your favourite AFL player?
A.A bit controversial, but I loved Jimmy Hird, champion player, great captain, he’s made some mistakes, but he’s bouncing back now.
Q.What do you like to do on the Gold Coast when you are not working?
A.I can be seen around the GC café’s  in my lycra sipping long blacks after a ride…….should I admit that???
Q.Where was your last holiday?
A.We snuck in a Ski trip to Japan in January 2020, it’s such a great family holiday, we all love it!  However when the kids start skiing faster than me I think I’ll put a stop to them 🙂
Q.What advice would you give today’s young professionals and future leaders of the city?
A.Never take what we have on the Gold Coast for granted, we have a thriving economy, consistent population growth, and a business culture that encourages people to reach for the sky!  Such an exciting mix for any young, ambitious person that wants to have a crack, jump in boots and all and have a go!
Q.What advice are you giving to your clients?
A.If you can’t take an overseas holiday, then you might as well buy a new set of wheels! 🙂
Q.What is one thing you have learned over your years as a business owner on the Gold Coast?
A.Tough to keep it to one, but it would have to be the importance of supporting the local community that supports our business.  Having a four young children all involved in activities, you realise how many people are selflessly giving up their own time to be involved in their local Sports Club, Surf Club, Dancing Academies, Charities, community support groups…….it’s incredible!  To get behind some of these actually lifts the morale of our employees and in turn improves our business, it’s a win/win!
